shop local for the holiday?
CB-I think when you buy something handmade, you are not only supporting the artist who made it - but you are going to give something unique to your friend or family member. It's really easy to go to your local chain and buy something prepackaged - it takes more effort and thought when you buy handmade. It's also really fun finding that perfect gift! It's like a treasure hunt. I also just read that buying handmade is more sustainable for the environment - there is less waste involved than if something is manufactured in a huge factory and then transported across the country to chain stores.
OBF- Shopping local can be a challenge how can we find the perfect gift?
CB-A lot of the holiday shows in the area have social media accounts where product spotlights are posted - those can give you ideas. Also, really just paying attention, a lot of people will drop hints on what they want for the holidays. Ha ha. Also, be patient when looking - don't settle until bells go off in your head!
OBF-Hand Made gifts are more common for women, What about men?
CB-There is a huge boom right now for men's products. I think a lot of artists started to realize that men can appreciate handmade as well. There is actually a show coming up Dec 5th at 5th Street Arcades called Manly Mart - all gifts for dudes! Made mostly by other dudes. It's a show co-sponsored by Crafty Mart (a show based in Akron) and Cleveland Bazaar. You will find things like totes for guys, wooden robots, beard oil, etc . . . .
OBF-Who is on your list to shop from this holidays season?
CB-This year I am shopping mostly for my daughter and husband and close family. I also like to plan crafty gifts to make to give to friends and extended family.
OBF-What shops are up year around ?
CB-Salty Not Sweet and Room Service on W. 25th, Crafty Goodness, Breakneck Art and The Good Goat Gallery in Lakewood, Trois Souers in Rocky River
OBF-Do you have any places or events that could be attended to shop local?
CB-Cleveland Bazaar will be at Winterfest at the 5th Street Arcades on Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29th! Our tenth anniversary holiday show will be Dec 13th and 14th at 78th Street Studios. I also really love The Last Minute Market at the Lake Erie Building (aka the Screw Factory) on Dec. 20th. It's one of my favorite shows - - besides ours of course!
OBF-What is in your xmas list essentials for the holidays?
CB- Me personally? Well, I really want cash to buy handmade items for myself - ha ha - and I really want to pick up a few things from Caroline of The Wandering Wardrobe. I also want a tshirt from Maiden Voyage Clothing and a piece from Mab Graves! (Look them up!)
