At Az&uacute;car, I gave each artist freedom of expression by asking them to bring an act that best represents their own voice. A person who is not of color experiencing a performing artist of color in action may only notice our style and physicality, but there is so much more to behold for those who pay attention. To understand what's happening onstage, one would need to take into consideration the mental and spiritual fortitude it requires to be a person of color in a world that hates you, and wants to see you dead, dying, or suffering.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;</span>A world that sees you as undesirable, disposable, and unworthy of love or celebration in any form. Every time a Performer of Color sets foot on a stage, we are bringing thousands of our ancestors with us. In addition to gifting us with supernatural talent and abilities, our resilient genetics also carry the trauma from the past injustices dealt to our people. This beautifully complex combination of things is etched into our bones and flowing through our veins.&nbsp;<span>&nbsp;</span></span>&#8203;<br /><br /><span>When you gaze upon our skin and revel at our undeniable beauty, don't forget that once we leave that stage, we go back out into the real world. It is not enough to love us only when we are entertaining you. We need you to love us when it's time to vote; bills and legislature are being passed that will directly harm our communities. We need you to love us at your local community housing meetings when you have the chance to fight for and create affordable housing; millions of artists are being displaced because of gentrification.</span><br /><span>We need you to love us when we speak out about the ways we are being harmed in the world, and believe us the first time we say it.<span>&nbsp;</span></span><br /><br /><span>Police brutality, environmental racism, and institutional racism are still major problems we deal with every day, even if when you don't<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;</span>see it in the headlines.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;</span>We need you to love us as whole people because it is as whole people we present ourselves to you.</span><br /><br /><span>Ms.Briq House</span><br /><span>Creator/Producer of The&nbsp;<span><span>Sunday</span></span>&nbsp;Night Shuga Shaq: An All People of Color Burlesque Revue</span><br /><span>IG/Twitter @Ms.briqhouse<span>&nbsp;</span></span></div> <div><div style="height: 20px; She remembers Castro&rsquo;s revolution happening in her teenage years, which led her to hold on to her spaniard traditions, specially through the uncertain political times in Cuba. Quite protective of the 19 year old statuesque Marinka, her parents, originally from Sevilla, would reminisce the celebrations of La Cruz de Mayo, one of the few times she could dance and enjoy the beautiful music and food before the darker days came.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>Marinka immigrated to New York City in 1959, encouraged by her father who passed in 1958. &nbsp;&ldquo; He knew what was coming&rdquo;, she states in a low voice, so her and her family called New York City their home, never to return to Cuba.</span></span><br /><br /><span><span>She entered a beauty pageant that won her a spot in the Powder Puff Revue, where she was paid the handsome sum of $125 for four days of work. She says &ldquo;as a white passing performer, they never thought I was latina&rdquo;. She states that &ldquo;the black women got horrible treatment in some theaters. We helped protect them but sometimes if was not enough&rdquo;. Thanks to my diverse ethnic background I grew up being fluent and educated in five languages- English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French and being very educated on Latino History I have not only been a burlesque performer for five years but also an instructor, and when I teach a class, I bring in Latin culture not only through physical dance movement but the langue and history associated which each type unique dance.&nbsp;</span><br /><br /><span>I feel when I first&nbsp;started&nbsp;burlesque, there were few references to Latino(a) performers unless you look at old grind house movies.&nbsp;Even burlesque history and pin-up culture were very whitewashed. As I started to delve into burlesque I fell in love with discovering our Latina&nbsp;Legends &amp; pioneers and have even fortunate enough to have them share their stories with me and guide me. Growing up in&nbsp;Nogales, Arizona, I never quite felt like I fit in to either Mexican or "American" culture. I played in a Mariachi but also in punk band. I danced ballet Folklorico but also classic ballet, contemporary and jazz on the high school pomline. I was too "white-washed" for the traditional Mexican&nbsp;community&nbsp;but too "Mexican" for American culture. I spent so&nbsp;much time trying to assimilate to white culture and deny my roots. Burlesque has brought my back to having&nbsp;</span><em>orgullo</em><span>&nbsp;for my cultures and my ethnic backgrounds. I love that I can blend it in with classic bump and grind, neo or comedy to offer it to my audiences. I feel as every performance I am blessed with, I am given a chance not only to know another layer of my as a burlesque performer but as representative of my culture.&nbsp; All this has given me a spotlight and a stage to educate and promote our culture and bring up questions of ethnic/culture/social issues.&nbsp; And nothing more could&nbsp;solidity&nbsp;this&nbsp;growth than by winning the Best Representation of Latin Culture at the 2014 Latin Burlesque Festival and being published in Latin Magazine September 2014 Issue.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span>&#8203;</div> <hr style="width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;"></hr> <div class="wsite-spacer" style="height:50px;"></div> <span class='imgPusher' style='float:left;height:0px'></span><span style='display: table;width:272px;position:relative;float:left;max-width:100%;;clear:left;margin-top:0px;*margin-top:0px'><a><img src="https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/editor/bella_3.jpg?1514867676" style="margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border-width:0; max-width:100%" alt="Picture" class="galleryImageBorder wsite-image" /></a><span style="display: table-caption; caption-side: bottom; font-size: 90%; margin-top: -10px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: center;" class="wsite-caption">Bella Sin - Xochiquetzal</span></span> <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:center;display:block;">Bella Sin is hailing originally from Juarez, in the state of Chihuahua, Bella Sin is a proud Mexican-Immigrant woman who holds the honor of being named &ldquo; One Of Cleveland's Most Interesting People 2011&rdquo; along with the run running tittle of &ldquo;Cleveland Burlesque Queen&rdquo;.<span>&nbsp; </span>She has been the Executive Producer of the Ohio International Burlesque Festival for its entire 8 years, and is the owner of the long running Le Femme Mystique Burlesque.<span>&nbsp; </span>She was also the Director of Logistics for the Cleveland Pride Parade and Festival &ldquo;Cle4Women Rally&rdquo; in 2013.<br /><br />Sin is an activist, instructor, historian, actress, and philanthropist - and is known throughout northeastern Ohio for revitalizing local Burlesque. I use aspects of my latin upbringing in every act. Aspects such as dance influence, rhythmic movements, that certain fuego in my presence, and hip gyrations. The hip gyrations and undulations is often perceived to be a sexual gesture especially in burlesque but in my Puerto Rican culture, it is part of the custom to dance like that, even at young prepubescent ages.&nbsp; In Latin culture dance is a means to tell stories, and it is the same with burlesque. I won Princess Of Latin Burlesque at the Latin Burlesque Festival with a tribute act to my Nuyorican roots. Growing up with my abuela and abuelo they would play boogaloo which is a fusion of Puerto Rican salsa and american soul &amp; r&amp;b music of the 50's and 60's. That originated when musicians from Puerto Rico came to New York in the 50s and found the r&amp;b and jazz clubs in Harlem and naturally the collaboration of both genres was born. Right now I am working on creating a Bomba act. Bomba is another genre of music from Puerto Rico. It is traditional heavy percussion based music that is a call and response between the drummers and dancer. It is a spiritual and political release/ expression that originated when enslaved Africans in Puerto Rico used the style of music and dance as a means of rebellion and uprising as well as celebration and to create identity and community. In the future I would love to do a tribute performance for my Mapuche Chilean side. There is incredible music and stories that originate in that culture. I have spent a lot of time at Pow Wows learning about my dad's people of the Andes, as well as listen to his stories of his time there. I'm excited to represent my Hispanic culture not only in every day life, but in burlesque!</span></div> <hr style="width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;"></hr> <div class="wsite-spacer" style="height:50px;"></div> <span class='imgPusher' style='float:left;height:0px'></span><span style='display: table;width:327px;position:relative;float:left;max-width:100%;;clear:left;margin-top:0px;*margin-top:0px'><a><img src="https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/published/13924932-10154018813713026-7461784908996476927-n.jpg?1514868445" style="margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border-width:0; max-width:100%" alt="Picture" class="galleryImageBorder wsite-image" /></a><span style="display: table-caption; caption-side: bottom; font-size: 90%; margin-top: -10px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: center;" class="wsite-caption">Legend Julie Mist </span></span> <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:left;display:block;"><span style="color:rgb(255, 255, 255); font-weight:bold"></span>After emigrating to the US from Havana and settling in New York, the Fabulous Julie Mist&nbsp;claims to be the Latin from Manhattan. Let me count the ways&hellip;<br />&#8203;<br />&#8203;First of all, Bella Sin and her production team make the festival both interesting and inclusive. I am never bored at the shows, the acts are always diverse, and the performers are also diverse. The OBF shows promote burlesque and the burlesque community &ndash; in all its shapes, sizes, colors, sexualities -- all of it! Every year at the festival I see performances that are innovative and unexpected! I love that!<br />The headliners are always amazing and OBF tries to select headliners and featured artists from previous Ohio Burlesque Festival performers. (I was very excited to be a featured performer in the 2016 festival!) Second, is appreciation.&nbsp;</span></div> <div><div class="wsite-multicol"><div class="wsite-multicol-table-wrap" style="margin:0 -15px;"> <table class="wsite-multicol-table"> <tbody class="wsite-multicol-tbody"> <tr class="wsite-multicol-tr"> <td class="wsite-multicol-col" style="width:50%; padding:0 15px;"> <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/11800443-933880336658475-1349789912321010845-n_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div> </td> <td class="wsite-multicol-col" style="width:50%; padding:0 15px;"> <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/11831748-933880759991766-5065635036536080029-n_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </div></div></div> <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/editor/11825018-933880446658464-5668491174049200133-n.jpg?1501056165" alt="Picture" style="width:344;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div> <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:center;"><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">The OBF production team makes efforts to appreciate the performers, provide quality, reduced rate lodging; provide quality gift bags with gifts and discounts we can easily use &ndash; including local sightseeing, free cupcakes, coupons from the festival vendors, and more. Plus, we get into all the shows during the festival for free. And we aren&rsquo;t just appreciated by the producer. Bella Sin and her team work tirelessly to make sure burlesque is recognized and appreciated. Last year, the festival was recognized with a proclamation from Cleveland&rsquo;s City Mayor Frank Jackson, a Scroll from the City Council and a Letter of Recognition from the State of Ohio House of Representatives. It is pretty amazing to be that appreciated by the city and the state&hellip; for taking off our clothes&hellip; (artistically, of course).&nbsp;</span></div> <div><div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden;"></div> <div id='789188891112172644-gallery' class='imageGallery' style='line-height: 0px; padding: 0; margin: 0'><div id='789188891112172644-imageContainer0' style='float:left;width:49.95%;margin:0;'><div id='789188891112172644-insideImageContainer0' style='position:relative;margin:5px;'><div class='galleryImageHolder' style='position:relative; width:100%; padding:0 0 75%;overflow:hidden;'><div class='galleryInnerImageHolder'><a href='https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/11796405-933880343325141-3550379897297179251-n_orig.jpg' rel='lightbox[gallery789188891112172644]'><img src='https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/11796405-933880343325141-3550379897297179251-n.jpg' class='galleryImage' _width='400' _height='599' style='position:absolute;border:0;width:100%;top:-49.83%;left:0%' /></a></div></div></div></div><div id='789188891112172644-imageContainer1' style='float:left;width:49.95%;margin:0;'><div id='789188891112172644-insideImageContainer1' style='position:relative;margin:5px;'><div class='galleryImageHolder' style='position:relative; width:100%; padding:0 0 75%;overflow:hidden;'><div class='galleryInnerImageHolder'><a href='https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/11800629-933880556658453-4955448201913848432-n_orig.jpg' rel='lightbox[gallery789188891112172644]'><img src='https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/11800629-933880556658453-4955448201913848432-n.jpg' class='galleryImage' _width='400' _height='267' style='position:absolute;border:0;width:112.36%;top:0%;left:-6.18%' /></a></div></div></div></div><div id='789188891112172644-imageContainer2' style='float:left;width:49.95%;margin:0;'><div id='789188891112172644-insideImageContainer2' style='position:relative;margin:5px;'><div class='galleryImageHolder' style='position:relative; width:100%; padding:0 0 75%;overflow:hidden;'><div class='galleryInnerImageHolder'><a href='https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/11822526-933881056658403-6155937546936329143-n_orig.jpg' rel='lightbox[gallery789188891112172644]'><img src='https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/11822526-933881056658403-6155937546936329143-n.jpg' class='galleryImage' _width='400' _height='599' style='position:absolute;border:0;width:100%;top:-49.83%;left:0%' /></a></div></div></div></div><div id='789188891112172644-imageContainer3' style='float:left;width:49.95%;margin:0;'><div id='789188891112172644-insideImageContainer3' style='position:relative;margin:5px;'><div class='galleryImageHolder' style='position:relative; width:100%; padding:0 0 75%;overflow:hidden;'><div class='galleryInnerImageHolder'><a href='https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/11822682-933881283325047-2161735755123598633-n_orig.jpg' rel='lightbox[gallery789188891112172644]'><img src='https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/11822682-933881283325047-2161735755123598633-n.jpg' class='galleryImage' _width='400' _height='267' style='position:absolute;border:0;width:112.36%;top:0%;left:-6.18%' /></a></div></div></div></div><span style='display: block; clear: both; height: 0px; overflow: hidden;'></span></div> <div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden;"></div></div> <span class='imgPusher' style='float:left;height:0px'></span><span style='display: table;width:319px;position:relative;float:left;max-width:100%;;clear:left;margin-top:0px;*margin-top:0px'><a><img src="https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/published/11218866-933880863325089-6295285442963601054-n.jpg?1501055791" style="margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 10px; border-width:1px;padding:3px; max-width:100%" alt="Picture" class="galleryImageBorder wsite-image" /></a><span style="display: table-caption; caption-side: bottom; font-size: 90%; margin-top: -10px; margin-bottom: 10px; text-align: center;" class="wsite-caption"></span></span> <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:center;display:block;"><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">Third, the festival is growing, becoming more polished, adding more amenities. If things don&rsquo;t work or there are ways to make them work better, the OBF production team makes efforts to make changes and better accommodate the performers and the show. Performers keep getting more amazing, the vendors are interesting and affordable, and the venue is cool and historic. This year there are classes, which is an exciting addition! Yay learning!&nbsp;<br /><br />Fourth, the festival is also used as a mechanism to appreciate and celebrate the local activist community. Every year there are awards and recognitions given during the festival to local activists and local groups that celebrate the diverse work that is being done in the Cleveland community to support different groups and ultimately provide benefits to the community as a whole. It is thoughtful, inclusive, and shows appreciation for an amazing group of people who work to make the world a better place.&nbsp;</span><br /></div> <hr style="width:100%;clear:both;visibility:hidden;"></hr> <div class="paragraph" style="text-align:center;"><span style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0)">And finally &ndash; everything else. Like other festivals, there are friendships made, chances to meet with others in the burlesque community, drink, eat, shop at vendors, sightsee in the city &ndash; all the fun things that you can do with your time. But, this is mostly about what makes the Ohio Burlesque Festival special&hellip; So, if you have not been, I recommend it &ndash; whether it is to attend, to volunteer, to apply &ndash; it is just an amazing experience and not quite like any other festival I have attended. I hope to see you there!</span></div> <div><div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;"></div> <hr class="styled-hr" style="width:100%;"></hr> <div style="height: 20px; overflow: hidden; width: 100%;"></div></div> <div><div class="wsite-multicol"><div class="wsite-multicol-table-wrap" style="margin:0 -0px;"> <table class="wsite-multicol-table"> <tbody class="wsite-multicol-tbody"> <tr class="wsite-multicol-tr"> <td class="wsite-multicol-col" style="width:33.333333333333%; padding:0 0px;"> <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:left"> <a> <img src="https://www.ohioburlesque.com/uploads/4/5/9/7/4597630/published/12512566-1112778655400650-1958322915706820119-n.jpg?1501055947" alt="Picture" style="width:210;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div> </td> <td class="wsite-multicol-col" style="width:66.666666666667%; padding:0 0px;"> <h2 class="blog-author-title" style="text-align:left;"><font size="4">Red Velvet</font></h2> <p style="text-align:left;"><span>Red Velvet, a life-long dancer, has performed extensively in musical theatre, performed throughout California, has studied and performed dance in New York, and has toured internationally. The irony of performing in a mostly Hispanic state, is that are only a handful of "brown and out" performers representing here. Traveling allowed me to finally see people&nbsp;<em>like</em>&nbsp;me.&nbsp;<br />I'm not talking "skin" color but people who openly celebrate or may have struggled embracing their culture. Through burlesque and travel I rediscovered a deep appreciation for my heritage and a profound sense of belonging. I also opened my eyes to incredibly amazing non-Hispanic/Latinos who are hungry to learn and embrace our culture. It is why not only do I love performing my "Latin Acts" but also love teaching my workshops; I literally see inclusive of culture blossom before my eyes.<br /><br />Befriending other Hispana &amp; Latina performers has been a true turning point in my life and career. Sitting down with Legends Kitten Natividad and Marinka, Queen of the Amazon brought me to tears. Other than my lovely Momma, I do not have many matriarch figures in my life, so the admiration and instant connection to these powerhouse ladies that pioneered the industry for us, brought me home on so many levels. And while I fully comprehend you do not have to speak Spanish or Portuguese to be Hispanic or Brazilian (just like we aren't marked by a skin tone) my heart melts instantly when I hear my native tongues back stage, on social media or within an ear shot.
