On August 4th 2013, Fear’s Confections made the leap to an out-of-home production and retail space. She was visited by TV-Celebrity Chef Alton Brown and is becoming a staple of local Cleveland Must Go To's for Local Eats.
OBF-How did you start your chocolatier career?
Fear-I was laid off in 2009 from my engineering job and started dabbling in brownie making while looking for work. We launched online in March of 2010, and branches out into candies about a year later.
Fear-My husband and I (and most of our friends) are geeks at heart. We make what we like in order to set ourselves apart from other chocolate shops. We started out with Doctor Who about a year ago, and have been expanding our geek line since.
Fears-Our first storefront was on the east side, and we opened it in August of 2013. After a year in that location, we decided to move it closer to home and reopened in Lakewood in October of 2014.
OBF-What do you love about chocolate?
Fears-I love that it is a delicious treat that brings happiness to so many people. Whether it's a personal reward for something well done, or something to brighten a person's day, it's something simple that spreads joy.
Fears-Aside from the geek chocolates, our most unique product is our sponge candy. It is something I grew up eating in Buffalo, but when I moved to Cleveland, I realized no one around here seems to have even heard of it. I learned to make it so I can bring a taste of my hometown into my shop. (And I can have it whenever I want without a 3.5 hour drive)
OBF-First time shopper at you store what do you recommend?
Fears-We are known for our caramels and use it in a variety of ways. We make plain and salted chocolate-dipped caramels, old fashioned caramels, caramel dipped Oreo cookies, and in the fall we make caramel apples.
